The Evansville Professional Fire Fighters Local 357 has a long history of advocating for the men and women of the Evansville Fire Department.
Originally organized in 1918 as Local 119, the union was formed to fight for fair wages and improved working conditions. After city officials promised better pay and conditions, members voted to disband. However, those promises went unfulfilled for years.
Recognizing the need for strong representation, Evansville fire fighters reorganized, and on February 28, 1939, Local 357 was officially chartered under the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana (PFFUI). Since then, the Local 357 has worked to improve workplace safety, secure competitive wages, and ensure long-term benefits for its members.
In its early years, Local 357 fought to address the significant dangers of fire fighting, securing better protective gear, training, and staffing. Over time, the union also helped bring modern fire apparatus and advanced communication systems to the Evansville Fire Department.
Beyond on-the-job improvements, Local 357 has played a key role in negotiating collective bargaining agreements, improving working conditions, and securing strong retirement benefits. The union continues to work alongside city leaders and the Professional Fire Fighters of Indiana (PFFUI) to ensure that fire fighters receive the support they need.
